What Happens After You Submit
Once you press submit, your manuscript goes through a series of steps before a decision reaches you. Knowing them makes the wait easier and helps you respond well.
Step by step
- Confirmation. You receive an email and can see the submission in your author dashboard.
- Technical and editorial check. Staff or an editor confirm the files, declarations, consent and formatting are complete, and that the paper fits the journal's scope.
- Similarity check. Many journals run the text through a similarity-checking service.
- Peer review. The editor invites independent reviewers and collects their reports.
- Decision. Accept, minor revisions, major revisions or reject, with the reviewers' comments.
- Revision. You revise and reply point by point. The editor, and sometimes the reviewers, check the changes.
- Production. After acceptance the paper is copyedited, typeset, sent to you for proof checking and published with a DOI.
What you should do while you wait
- Do not submit the same manuscript to another journal at the same time.
- Keep your contact details current and check your spam folder for journal emails.
- Keep your data, consent forms and figure source files ready in case they are requested.
